Mockernut Hickory (Carya tomentosa)

Mockernut Hickory is a large deciduous shade tree that is native to the eastern U.S. It is a great tree to use in residents, parks, city parkways and wide medians.  Growing 50-60′ tall and 20-30′ wide, this hickory requires full sun and moist well-drained soils but will tolerate drought conditions. It is prized for its yellow fall color, edible fruit and attractive bark. Hickories are great habitat for all kinds of different wildlife including many birds and small mammals. The wood is prized for being used in furniture, flooring, tool handles, baseball bats and skis. The wood also has a high fuel value and is great to use for smoking hams. This hickory is also tolerant of black walnut’s juglone.
